Jigger Eradication

A jigger is a minuscule parasitic flea that burrows into the skin, primarily targeting the feet and hands of individuals.

Once embedded, the female lays eggs, and without proper treatment, the infestation can rapidly multiply, resulting in intense itching, impaired mobility, and the risk of secondary infections or, in severe cases, amputation.

Jigger infestations cause severe pain for both children and adults, making it difficult for them to walk, attend school, or participate in income-generating activities.

Factors That Worsen the Problem

The elderly are especially vulnerable to jigger infestations, as their poor eyesight makes it difficult for them to remove the pests and properly maintain the floors by smearing them with cow dung.

Factors That Worsen the Problem

Children, too, suffer greatly from jigger infestations, particularly those without a responsible adult to care for them. Without the ability to remove the jiggers themselves or receive assistance, they are left highly susceptible to this painful and debilitating problem.

The shame associated with having jiggers further worsens the situation, as those affected often isolate themselves from neighbors and others. This lack of treatment and care allows the jiggers to multiply quickly, spreading and taking over limbs in a short period of time.

OLCAP’s Intervention

OLCAP actively engages with families and schools to provide treatment for both children and adults afflicted by the painful effects of jigger infestation.

Our comprehensive treatment includes washing affected areas, soaking the affected areas in jigger suffocating drugs, and physically removing the jiggers using scalpels. The patients are also given painkillers and antibiotics to stave off potential infections in the open wounds, ensuring a smoother recovery process.

Additionally, OLCAP procures shoes for affected individuals and conducts hygiene training sessions to mitigate the likelihood of re-infection.
